How Do I Order Coffee at Starbucks?
A few students have asked me this throughout the years.
Many people order the same thing each time they visit
Starbucks to avoid complications. I hope that this article
will help you feel more adventurous with your future orders.
Here are some helpful hints, but I have to admit that I often
order hot chocolate (at kid’s temperature because I don’t
want to burn my mouth).
1. Choose the size you want. Here is a breakdown of the
sizes that are available:
a. Tall = 12 ounces
b. Grande = 16 ounces
c. Venti = 20 ounces
Some Starbucks also offer
d. Short = 8 ounces
e. Trenta = 24 ounces
By the way, “oz.” is the abbreviation for ounce.
2. Ask about seasonal flavors when you order. Pumpkin
flavor is usually available in the fall and winter. Coconut
is available in the summer. Popular syrup flavors (vanilla,
caramel, and hazelnut) are available as regular or
3. Choose the liquid base. Specify (tell the barista) if you
want nonfat, 2% milk, soymilk, or half-and-half as milk
options. Some Starbucks carry almond milk. You can get
any drink hot or iced.
4. How much caffeine do you want? “Decaf” means “with
no caffeine.” “Half-Caf” means half of the normal amount
5. Brewed coffee is the cheapest and easiest to order on
6. To order, start with 1) the size of the drink, then 2) the
temperature (hot or iced), 3) the name, and end with 4)
any changes you want to make. For example, “tall, iced
chai, light ice (not too much)” or “venti chai tea latte with
extra foam.” You may also order a “tall, cafe Americano
avoid = go around, do not encounter

at a cafe
carry = have
with room = with space between the liquid and the top of

without causing the coffee to spill out of the cup
